We can not emphasize strongly enough that GPS and online mapping systems are unreliable in the High Country. Furthermore, mobile phones have very little if any reception around the race courses. Please plan accordingly.

Beech Mountain Time Trial

The town of Beech Mountain is easily reached via the interstate system. Major approaches are I77, I81, I85, I26, and I40. Main highways from the interstates are US 221, US 321, US 421, and from East Tennessee, US 19E.

From points North (Boone/Blowing Rock/US 421/US 321 (north) or points South (Asheville/US 221) take NC 105 to NC 184. Follow NC 184 to end. At traffic light (Mobil gas station on left) turn left on NC 194/Main St for approximately 1/4 mile, passing Lees-McRae college on left. Bear right at Sunrise Shopping Center onto Beech Mountain Parkway. Follow parkway up the mountain to the town of Beech Mountain. Please obey our volunteers directing you to park as space is limited and we have to use it efficiently.

From points West (Tri-Cities, TN/I-26) follow US 19E East past Roan Mountain and Elk Park, turning left onto NC 194. Follow for 6.5 miles. Take a sharp left at Sunrise Shopping Center onto Beech Mountain Parkway. Follow parkway up the mountain to the town of Beech Mountain. Please obey our volunteers directing you to park as space is limited and we have to use it efficiently.

Note, you can also take US 321 between Boone and Elizabethton, TN to Buckeye Rd. to Buckeye Creek Rd to Grassy Gap Creek Rd for more direct access to the start, however you will be driving on the course, including approximately 2 miles on rolling gravel roads.

The Town of Beech Mountain will be running a shuttle from 5:30PM to 9:00PM between the start at the Buckeye Recreation Center and the finish at Beech Mountain Town Hall. It will leave the start at the bottom of the hour and the finish at the top of the hour.

Boone Road Race

Historic Cove Creek School

207 Dale Adams Road, Sugar Grove, NC 28679

Located 7.3 miles west of Boone, NC.  Take US 421/321 west toward TN 5.2 miles.  US 421 splits north toward Mountain City TN.  US 321 splits west toward Hampton TN.  Turn left on US 321 and go 1.1 miles to Sugar Grove.  The Cove Creek Grocery is on the right, the Sugar Grove Post Office on the left.  Turn right on Old US 421 just past the Cove Creek Grocery.  Follow signs for parking for the event.

To get to the Historic Cove Creek School building (limited parking), after turning on Old US 421, turn left at George’s Gap Road.  Follow it around the bends, past Skyline Telephone, to Dale Adams Road on the right.  Turn right on Dale Adams Road.  The school building is on the left. Again, please obey the volunteers directing you to a parking lot, and be prepared to park up to a half-mile from the registration and starting area.

Newland Criteriums

Greenway Park

211 River Street, Newland, NC 28657

From Beech Mountain, take NC 184 through Banner Elk past pond on right. Turn right on Hickory Nut Gap Rd and follow to 194 South in Newland (very curvy mountain road—in inclement weather use US 221).

From Boone, take NC 105 South past NC 184. Continue straight to US 221 in Linville and turn right on US 221/NC 181 to go to Newland.

From points South take US 221 North to NC 194 in Crossnore and continue to Newland.

Start is near corner of River and Ash Streets one block South of 181 and one block East of 194 across from the Lowe’s Foods.
